34 Years Unjustly Imprisoned. One Journey to Freedom and Justice.

Darrell A. Siggers taught himself law inside a Michigan prison, built his own case file page by page, and walked out after three decades behind a conviction that never should have stood. He now writes, speaks, and advocates so the next person does not have to do it alone.

“Sixteen lawyers handled my case. A man in a cell with a pencil found the truth first.”

Completed Manuscript — Seeking Representation

In 1984, Darrell Siggers was convicted of a murder in Detroit on the strength of a ballistics conclusion and a witness account that could not hold. He was twenty. He would spend the next thirty-four years in Michigan prisons, where he learned to read a transcript the way a surgeon reads a chart.

Sixteen Lawyers is the account of that education. It follows the attorneys who came and went, the filings that were denied, the forensic report that was never turned over, and the slow accumulation of paper that finally forced the courtroom to look again. It is a book about evidence — and about what a man builds inside himself while he waits for the record to be read.

Written with the precision of a case file and the pace of a thriller, the memoir closes not at the prison gate but in the years after: the work of reentry, the founding of an advocacy practice, and the return to law schools and podiums as a teacher rather than a defendant.

On the record

I read law books by the light of a hallway bulb for thirty-four years. The system did not free me. The record did.
